Children’s dentistry in Mulund East
A child’s first dental visits set the pattern for life. Dr Ria Gerela sees children for check-ups, fillings, sealants and fluoride treatment, and gives parents the plain preventive advice that stops most problems before they start.
What it is
What children’s dentistry covers
Children’s dentistry is mostly prevention. Milk teeth matter: they hold space for the adult teeth, and decay in them hurts just as much. A check-up looks at the teeth, the gums, how the teeth are coming through and the bite.
Fluoride treatment strengthens enamel against decay. Sealants are a thin coating painted into the grooves of the back teeth, where most childhood decay starts, so food and plaque cannot lodge there. Where a cavity has already formed, a small filling done early is quick and stops it spreading.
What happens at the visit
Step 1
Getting comfortable
The first visit is short and gentle. Your child sits in the chair, has a ride up and down, meets the mirror and the light, and has the teeth counted.
Step 2
Check-up and prevention
Dr Ria checks every tooth and the gums, takes a digital X-ray only if it is needed, and applies fluoride or sealants where they will help.
Step 3
Advice for parents
You are shown how to brush your child’s teeth, told what to do about bottles, sweets and snacking, and when to come back.
Sittings and aftercare
How many sittings
A check-up with fluoride is one short visit. Sealants are usually done in the same visit or the next. A filling is one visit per tooth or per side, done with local anaesthetic where needed and kept as short as a child can manage. Fees are confirmed when you book.
Aftercare
- No food or drink for the time you are told after fluoride, so it can work
- Brush twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste, a parent helping until the child can do it well
- Water rather than juice or milk in a bottle at bedtime
- Sweets with meals rather than between them
- Keep the recall visit, most childhood decay is caught early at a routine check

Full profile →Questions patients ask
When should my child first see a dentist?
Early, ideally soon after the first teeth come through and before any problem. An early visit is about getting comfortable and checking that everything is coming through as it should, so the first real treatment, if ever needed, is not the first visit.
Do milk teeth need fillings if they fall out anyway?
Yes, where the decay is deep enough. A decayed milk tooth hurts, can become infected and can damage the adult tooth forming beneath it. Dr Ria will say which teeth need a filling and which can simply be watched.
Is fluoride safe?
Fluoride treatment in the clinic is applied to the teeth in a small, controlled amount and is a standard part of preventive dentistry for children. Dr Ria will advise how often it is worth doing for your child.
