Braces and clear aligners in Mulund East
Crooked, crowded or protruding teeth can be straightened at any age. Dr Ria Gerela offers conventional braces, lingual braces fitted behind the teeth, and clear removable aligners, so adults who do not want visible braces have a real choice.
What it is
How teeth are straightened
Orthodontic treatment moves teeth slowly into a better position using gentle, steady pressure. Conventional braces use small brackets on the front of the teeth joined by a wire. Lingual braces work the same way but are fitted on the inside surface, so they are hidden from view.
Clear aligners are a series of thin, transparent removable trays, each moving the teeth a little further than the last. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, and a bite that meets properly puts less strain on the teeth and the jaw.
What happens at the visit
Step 1
Assessment
Dr Ria examines the teeth and bite, takes a digital X-ray and impressions or photographs, and explains which options suit your case, conventional, lingual or clear aligners, and roughly how long each would take.
Step 2
Fitting
Braces are bonded to the teeth in one appointment. For aligners, the first set of trays is fitted and you are shown how to wear, remove and clean them.
Step 3
Adjustments
You come back at regular intervals so the wires can be adjusted or the next aligners handed over, and progress is checked against the plan.
Sittings and aftercare
How many sittings
Orthodontic treatment runs over months rather than weeks, with short review visits every few weeks. How long it takes depends on how far the teeth have to move, and Dr Ria gives you an estimate at the assessment. When the braces come off, or the last aligner is worn, a retainer holds the teeth in their new position. Wearing it as advised is what keeps the result. Fees are confirmed when you book.
Aftercare
- Brush after every meal with fixed braces, food catches around the brackets
- Aligners come out to eat and to drink anything but water, and go straight back in
- Wear aligners for the hours a day you are told, they only work while they are in
- Avoid very hard or sticky food with fixed braces
- Wear your retainer as advised once treatment ends

Full profile →Questions patients ask
Am I too old for braces?
No. Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the gums and bone around them are healthy. Many adults choose lingual braces or clear aligners because they are far less visible than conventional braces.
Lingual braces or clear aligners, which is better?
Lingual braces are fixed behind the teeth, work continuously and suit most cases, including complex ones. Clear aligners are removable trays, easier to eat and clean with, but they rely on you wearing them for most of the day and suit mild to moderate cases best. Dr Ria will say which is realistic for your teeth.
Will it hurt?
Teeth feel tender for a few days after braces are fitted or adjusted, or when you change to a new aligner. It settles, and a simple painkiller usually covers it. Lingual braces can rub the tongue in the first week and wax is provided for that.
