Heart & Diabetes · Dr Manoj Gerela
Diabetes care in Mulund and Bhandup
Dr Manoj Gerela, diabetologist and cardiologist, looks after type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes and pre-diabetes at all three Good Health locations. The HbA1c, the sugar profile and continuous glucose monitoring are done at the Mulund East clinic, usually in the same visit as the consultation.
Is this for you
Come in if any of these sound familiar
- A high sugar on a routine blood test, or an HbA1c that has crept up over the last few reports.
- Diabetes you have managed alone for years, on the same tablets, without a proper review.
- Type 1 diabetes, or diabetes that was found during pregnancy.
- Pre-diabetes, or a parent or sibling with diabetes, and you want a baseline before it becomes a problem.
- Thirst, passing urine often, tiredness, blurred vision or a wound that is slow to heal. These can have other causes, and a sugar test settles it quickly.
- Diabetes together with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a heart problem, which is the combination Dr Manoj sees most.
What happens at the visit
Three parts, usually in one trip
History and examination
Dr Manoj asks how long you have had diabetes, what you take, what your readings have been doing and what else is going on: blood pressure, weight, sleep, smoking, family history. He checks your blood pressure, your weight and your feet, because nerve and circulation changes in the feet are easy to miss at home.
Tests, done here
HbA1c, fasting and post-prandial glucose, lipid profile, kidney and thyroid panel are all run in the pathology lab at Mulund East. Where finger-prick readings are not telling the whole story, continuous glucose monitoring, a sensor worn for several days, shows what your sugar actually does between meals and overnight.
The plan
You leave with targets you understand, a diet and activity plan that fits how you actually live, medicines only if they are needed, and a clear note on when and how to check your sugar at home. If your heart or blood pressure needs attention, it is handled in the same plan rather than a separate referral.
Follow-up
Diabetes is managed over years, not in one visit
How often you come back depends on how settled your sugar is. Many people have an HbA1c roughly every three months while a plan is being adjusted, and less often once things are stable. Dr Manoj sets the interval for you and writes it on your prescription.
Once a year, the review usually widens to include kidney function, a lipid profile and a diabetic foot check, because diabetes affects the kidneys, the blood vessels and the nerves quietly. If an eye examination is due, he will tell you, and we will help you arrange it.
What to bring
It makes the visit more useful
- Your previous reports, especially any HbA1c and kidney tests.
- The medicines you take, the boxes rather than a list from memory.
- Your glucometer and your home readings if you keep them.
- If a fasting test is planned, come in the morning without breakfast. Water is fine. Call ahead if you are unsure whether to skip a medicine.
Who does it
In clinical practice since 2001. Post-graduation in cardiology and diabetology at the Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai, and a fellowship in 2D echocardiography from the American Society of Echocardiography. He treats diabetes and the heart together, which is how they usually arrive.

Questions about diabetes care
Do I need to fast before the visit?
Only if a fasting sugar or a lipid profile is planned. An HbA1c does not need fasting. If you are not sure, call the Mulund East desk the day before and they will tell you. Do not skip your usual medicines without asking.
What is continuous glucose monitoring and do I need it?
A small sensor worn on the skin for several days that records sugar continuously. It is useful when readings swing, when night-time lows are suspected or when tablets are being changed. Dr Manoj decides with you whether it will change the plan. It is fitted at Mulund East.
I consult at Bhandup West. Where do I do my blood tests?
Tests are done at the Mulund East clinic. Dr Manoj writes out what is needed at your Bhandup West or Mulund West consultation, and the Mulund East desk will fix a slot. Most results come back the same day.
